The annual Reykjavik Open Pub Quiz took place last night. The event has become a pretty established part of the tournament and has been held for nearly two decades! Various distinguished chess players have won the quiz over the years, including Magnus Carlsen teamed up with Jon Ludvig Hammer, and Helgi Ólafsson with Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, editor of New in Chess.
This year an Icelandic team came, saw, and conquered. It was especially fun to see that Gauti Páll Jónsson won for the third time—each time with different teammates—making him, as far as we know, the only Icelandic participant to have won three times! Joining Gauti on the winning team were Arnar Ingi, Björgvin, and Askur.
The girls on the women’s national team were agonisingly close to first place, but at the last moment they changed correct answers to wrong ones and missed out on victory.
This year’s quiz was probably on the tougher side: the winning team scored 20 points, which is among the lowest totals that has still been enough to win over the years.
