Reykjavík Open 2017 – Special Events

As in recent years, there will be many side events held in conjunction with the 2017 Reykjavík Open. The 2017 event list will be published soon. Below is the schedule for the 2016 open, it will be very similar for 2017.

Monday 7th of March

Opening Party
For the last two years we’ve held a welcome party for participants arriving the day before. Most likely this will take place in the Sky Lounge and Bar which is situated on the 7th floor of Hotel Arnarhvoll with a great view. A great way to get to know the organisers and fellow competitors!

 

THUrSDAY 10th of March

Every year there is a well received (and attended!) Golden Circle tour. The date hasn’t been decided but most likely it will be on Thursday like the last two years

Guided tour around some of the most spectacular sights in Southern Iceland, including the Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir hot spring and Bobby Fischer´s final resting place.

Note that we have pushed the round on this day to 17:00 to accompany the many players that regularly go to this tour. In 2014 players wanted more time after the tour to prepare and of course we listened!

 

FRIDAY 11th of March

The World Famous Reykjavík Open Chess Pub-Quiz (after the round)
The really popular and entertaining chess pub quiz which is becoming a standard feature of the tournament will be here yet again.  As usual there are 30 questions about chess and the history of the game, both recent and past. This will be a pair event. Last years winner was none other than Magnus Carlsen who visisted the open along with his second, Jon Ludvig Hammer. Registration on-site!

 

Saturday 12th of March

Blitz Tournament at 20:00
A nine round regular blitz tournament. This year there will be no time odds complications and time control will be 3+2 (3 minutes for game with 2 second increment)  The tournament will be in HARPAN! Registration on saturday during the Open round, registration closes at 15:00!

Minimum age: 18 years. Tournament is NOT rated!

Entry fee 10 euros(1500kr. ISL) should be paid when registered. At least 50% off the entry fee will go to the prize pool. Money prizes for the top three seeds.

 

 

Saturday 12th of March

The “Kids´n Blitz” Tournament
The finals of a blitz tournament for 13 year and younger children from the Reykjavík metropolitan area. Elimination format. Will be played in the morning, and finish just before the start of that days round.

The finals will be in the headquarters of GAMMA and will start at 11:00

 

 

MONday 14th of March

Reykjavik International Backgammon Tournament

On monday evening in HARPAN, the Icelandic Backgammon Federation
will organize a special backgammon-tournament for chess players. The system of play will be single elimination, matches to 7 points. For the players who lose their first match, there will be second chance tournament, for the 25% of the tournament budget.

Entry fee will be 30 euros, 10 euros will go to Icelandic Backgammon Federation ,
registration will be at the tournament hall.

Football – Iceland vs. Rest of the World
The 5th annual soccer match, open to all. To be played at 22:00 at a venue to be announced. Registration possible up to and including Saturday. Last year we formed 4 teams and we will base the event on participation.

 

Wednesday 16th of march

Closing Ceremony
Closing ceremony at Reykjavík City Hall (to be confirmed!) commences at 17:30. This has gone well in past years and usually there are complimentary drinks and light snacks. Everybody welcome.
